Hurricane Safety – 2010

Published by Tybee Concierge under Destination Information, Safety Tips

The hurricane season is June 1st to November 1st. Unless you have a boat, there is only one way in and out of Tybee and that is Hwy 80–the Tybee Road. If a storm is coming, make sure you pay attention to the weather reports, either by weather radio, TV or regular radio. Tybee Vacation Rentals will also post the latest information at http://tybeeconcierge.com/storm-update/.

IF THERE IS A MANDATORY EVACUATION, LEAVE!!!

With only one way off the island, it is imperative that you leave immediately. Traffic will be heavy, and even worse once you get into the Savannah environs. You’ll need all the time you can get to get to safety.

Sirens will sound when ANY type of bad weather is expected. We can have tornados here and damaging storms, so pay close attention. If you hear the sirens, take cover immediately.

Tybee Vacation Rentals will do our best to notify you if there is an evacuation, but do not hesitate to leave.

For instructional videos and more information go to: www.nhc.noaa.gov.

Pets Are Welcome on Tybee

Published by Tybee Concierge under Pet Friendly Vacation Rentals, Safety Tips

Why leave your best friend home when you come on vacation? Tybee Vacation Rentals has some 40 pet friendly properties and we welcome them as part of your family. And although dogs aren’t allowed on the beach (at least right now), we have 2 dog parks, doggie welcome packets and walking trails. Call us at 912.786.5853 for reservations.

For more information on Pets go to:
http://www.examiner.com/x-10826-Savannah-Pets-Examiner~y2009m8d18-pet-boarding-and-doggie-day-care-in-the-Savannah-GA-area

And if you plan on bringing your pet, keep these things in mind:

1. Go to your vet and get your pet checked out before you come. Get flea medicine and copies of the pet’s vaccine records just in case. Make sure your pet is healthy before traveling. You may want to even consider getting your pet microchipped with pertinent information on it.

2. Your pet should have a legible ID tag with his name, your name, your address, and your phone number even if it is microchipped.

3. Bring a few of the pet’s familiar items: food, bed, toys and treats. This isn’t the time to make changes which might make them sick.

4. Bring a crate just in case, and a gate to keep the pet confined to one area of your rental home.

5. Pack a first-aid kit for your animal. Ask your vet which items are best for traveling.

6. NEVER, EVER LEAVE YOUR PET IN THE CAR. Temperatures can heat up quickly or become very cold quickly.

7. Schedule regular stops when traveling with your pet. They need stretch breaks, bathroom breaks and water breaks. Give THEM a break.

We will look forward to seeing you and your pet on Tybee.

Rip Currents

Published by Tybee Concierge under Beach Blog, Safety Tips

Often Tybee Island will experience rip currents produced by waves and generated by storms out at sea. The weather may be fine, but rip currents could be lurking and dangerous. You can even see them if you look as the water is more “ripply.” These currents are very powerful, and if you’re stuck in one, it can pull you out to sea. Here is some information about what to do if you get caught in one.

Your first reaction will be to panic and try to fight the current. DO NOT FIGHT IT! Try and remember to calm down–tell yourself to relax–float on your back for a bit to get yourself in control.

Swim perpendicular to the current. You will feel a change once you are able to begin heading for the shore, then start to slowly swim to shore. You should be able to get back, but if you’re still having trouble, swim perpendicular some more until you are beyond it. Then swim toward the shore.

Rip currents can kill you if you aren’t careful. But if you are caught in one, don’t panic. You’ll make it if you stay calm and THINK.

Enjoy your Hot Tub safely.

Published by Tybee Concierge under Safety Tips

Are you lucky! You have a hot tub! What a great way to relax and unwind. But, there are some safety issues when it comes to these restful tubs.

Please call TVR if you have any questions or need service at your pool. 786-5853.

1. CHILD SAFETY: Don’t use a hot tub as a babysitter. Experts say a child can drown in less than 5 minutes. Be sure all children are supervised at all times in any hot tub no matter how shallow the water. In large groups, appoint a designated watcher to protect young children from hot tub accidents.
