Tybee Named Better Home Town

Published by Tybee Concierge under Awards

The City of Tybee Island, Georgia, is extremely pleased to announce the designation of Tybee Island as a Better Home Town Community under the Georgia Main Street Program.

A statement from the Georgia’s Department of Community Affairs noted, “The state Main Street program is delighted to welcome Tybee Island into our program. The city has demonstrated that they understand Main Street principles, and their board and volunteers are doing an outstanding job in supporting small businesses and job creation in the community.”

Tybee Mayor Jason Buelterman was enthusiastic about achieving Better Home Town status. “This is a wonderful distinction for our community and a testament to the hard work and dedication of many Tybee volunteers and City staff members. We look forward to continuing our work as we strive to become a more favorable climate in which to live and operate businesses.”  “I am extremely proud to have the opportunity to work with the City of Tybee, business owners and residents who have joined together to make becoming a Better Hometown Community a reality,” Ms. Morton said after receiving notification of acceptance. “The volunteer attitude on the Island is truly amazing, and the efforts to work as a team continue to prove successful! Receiving the designation is validation of the work by many to maintain the quality of life through a healthy business corridor and to enhance the cultural experience while preserving this barrier island’s heritage.”

Congratulations to Chantel Morton, our Better Hometown Coordinator, to Jonathan Lynn, director of Tybee’s Economic Development Department, to the Better Hometown Board of Directors, and to Mayor, Council, staff, and volunteers – we all knew already that Tybee is a Better Home Town!

Riverboat Cruises

Published by Tybee Concierge under Activities, African American Travel, Food/Produce, Historic Savannah, Kids and Families, Where to Eat

For a wonderful outing take a ride on a Riverboat steamboat. The boat offers a myriad of cruises, from sightseeing up and down the Savannah River, to gospel dinners, to moonlight cruises, to entertainment dinner cruises, to lunch cruises, to Geeche dinners and “Murder Afloat” cruises.

A specialty cruise is the Cullah Geechee Performance cruise. Get a taste of the lowcountry living as you learn about how the Gullah Geechee people adapted to the sea island areas of Georgia and South Caroline after they journeyed here from West Africa. Enjoy a performance by Patt Gunn, a “daughter of the dust” of the coast of Ga. She is considered one of 14 “Waterway guardians” who are the memory keepers of the Gullah Gerechee folkways and foodways.  These will take plance Thursday nights, May 20-August 12.

Another specialty cruise is the Haunted Harbour Cruise. This is a spooky and fun tour of one of the most haunted rivers in North America. The Ghost Host will introduce you to several of his closest dearly-departed friends. There is no gore and the ghostly characters are friendly and fun. Friday nights: June through August. Boards at 9:00 pm.

For reservations or more information on any of these or other cruises call 912.232.6404 or 1.800.786.6404 or go to www.savannahriverboat.com.

Think Before you Toss

Published by Tybee Concierge under Attractions, Ecotourism, Educational Activities, Green Travel

Recently I visited the UGA Marine Science Center on Skidaway Island. It’s a great little gem, worth a visit especially if children are with you. They have a wonderful set of aquariums, featuring over 200 animals that represent 50 species native to Georgia’s coastal waters, where you can see and study marine life up close and personal, and they have a touch tank where guests can pick up and touch marine animals.  Their displays include a nurse shark, a loggerhead sea turtle and seahorses. They are located on the Intercoastal Waterway, and you can bring a picnic lunch and sit at the picnic tables and lull away an afternoon watching the water. Birds land a take off there, so if you are a bird watcher, it’s great, for that as well. I sat under a pear tree, enjoying the breeze and reading a book while I waited for my group. They do special programs for groups using microscopes, marsh walks and films to illustrate marine life and to teach guests about environmental issues; I was the tour leader for one of those groups.

They have a myriad of posters that are FREE, some of which make wonderful works of art, if framed (Georgia’s Salt Marsh Official Habitat). Some are great for kids rooms (Marine Fishes of Georgia), and they have a great map of the Coast of Georgia. We framed the latter and have it hanging in our rental unit—it always gets interesting comments. We also have a framed copy hanging in the Concierge’s office at Tybee Vacation Rentals.

One particular poster caught my eye.  It was titled “Marine Debris from Land and Sea—In the Environment a Long, Long Time.” I was appalled at the information it provided. It featured a beach and shore, and the shore water had items one might commonly find in the ocean—that is, those things that people toss away–and how long it took for those things to break down.

Did you know that those plastic beverage holders take 400 years to “breakdown” to nothing? Four hundred years!!!!! And people toss these out all of the time. Disposable diapers? Continue Reading »
