Savannah finished sixth among American Style magazine’s 13th annual listing of the top 25 art destinations among mid-sized cities. The top mid-sized cities were St. Petersburg, FL; New Orleans; Alexandria, VA; Chattanooga, Tenn.; Buffalo, NY. For a wonderful outing take a ride on a Riverboat steamboat. The boat offers a myriad of cruises, from sightseeing up and down the Savannah River, to gospel dinners, to moonlight cruises, to entertainment dinner cruises, to lunch cruises, to Geeche dinners and “Murder Afloat” cruises.
A specialty cruise is the Cullah Geechee Performance cruise. Get a taste of the lowcountry living as you learn about how the Gullah Geechee people adapted to the sea island areas of Georgia and South Caroline after they journeyed here from West Africa. Enjoy a performance by Patt Gunn, a “daughter of the dust” of the coast of Ga. She is considered one of 14 “Waterway guardians” who are the memory keepers of the Gullah Gerechee folkways and foodways. These will take plance Thursday nights, May 20-August 12.
Another specialty cruise is the Haunted Harbour Cruise. This is a spooky and fun tour of one of the most haunted rivers in North America. The Ghost Host will introduce you to several of his closest dearly-departed friends. There is no gore and the ghostly characters are friendly and fun. Friday nights: June through August. THESE CONCERTS TAKE PLACE EVERY SUMMER. WATCH FOR NEXT YEAR’S EVENTS. The Department of Cultural Affairs will present a series of free live concerts in Johnson Square throughout the summer. Sixteen concerts are planned Wed., June 2nd through July 23rd. Concerts are 11:00 am – 2:00 pm Wed. and Fri. Wed. entertainment will feature Roger Moss & Eric Jones.
The concert lineup also includes Silver Lining (modern jazz); Jan Spillane (fold/blues); vocalist Claire Frazier & Frank Bright (jazz); the Bottles ‘n Cans (blues).

On March 12, 1912 Juliette Gordon Low founded the Girl Scouts, and next year will be the 100th birthday of that great group. Ms. Low was born and raised in Savannah and later in life she met Sir Robert Baden-Powell, founder of Britain’s Boy Scouts. Convinced that all young women should be self-reliant and resourceful, she returned to the United States and assembled 18 girls for the first meeting of the American Girl Guides, renamed the Girl Scouts.
In need of a regular place for the girls together, Low converted the carriage house and stable behind her Lafayette Square mansion into a headquarters, and began organizing camping trips and hiking excursions, and offering classes in astronomy and first aid.
