Charly’s-Now Serving Breakfast

Published by Tybee Concierge under Dining Specials, Tybee Restaurants, Where to Eat

Breakfast is not always easy to find on Tybee. The Breakfast Club is terrific, but sometimes the line is too long; and we have a couple of other places that are OK. Now we have Charly’s and it is wonderful.

Charly’s is located next to the Post Office and after Friday, they’ll have the wonderful, intimate inner dining room AND a beautiful outdoor deck. They have lots of colorful art and their windows sport artsy figures in lots of colors.

I had the crabmeat omelet and it was fabulous. My friend was on a diet and asked for the egg-white omelet–not on the menu but Grayson fixed it anyway. They had two specials: fish on potatoes and scrambled eggs with fried potatoes and sausage–both for around $6-7. The prices are very reasonable, food plentiful and very good.

They are open everyday except Wed. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday they are open for breakfast from 7:30 am to 10:00 am and on weekends they extend the time to 11:00 am, after which lunch begins.

Lunch and dinner are also reasonably priced and they have various baskets; salads, lobster bisque, all kinds of seafood, steaks, chicken and two specialties: grilled lamb lollipops and roasted half duck. Every Friday their special is All You Can  Eat Crab Legs for $21.95-$25.95. They offer three desserts: Tiramisu, Key Lime Pie and Creme Brulee.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner–try Charly’s. You won’t be sorry.

Burtons on the Beach

Published by Tybee Concierge under Tybee Restaurants, Where to Eat

Some of the best food on Tybee for reasonable prices can be found at Burton’s On the Beach. This is a walk up restaurant that cooks all food to order and some say the  hamburgers are by far the best on Tybee.  Philly cheesesteak is great too.  Location: 1605 Inlet Ave; 912.786.9655.

Weekly Happenings at Social

Published by Tybee Concierge under Tybee Restaurants, Where to Eat

Have you tried the new Social restaurant yet? It is fun and different, and the food is great. I would call it a California style menu, with some items served in smaller sizes (let’s you try a couple of things) and sandwiches served in a wrap. They have an large outdoor deck (covered) that is just delightful and the best white and red Sangria you’d ever want to have.

The other great thing about Social is that they have something happening every night. Here’s the rundown:

Monday – Monday Night Football
Tuesday – Bingo at the Bar (prizes)
Wednesday – Wino Wednesdays (tastings and specials)
Thursday – Theatre Thursday (outdoor movie night)
Friday – Live Fridays (featuring an array of musicians)
Saturday – Oyster roasts and Saturday nite football
Sunday – Sunday Funday (open Bible & NFL, Jason Bible, that is)

Seven days a week starting at 6:00 pm there are margaritas 2 for 1; and one of the drink specialties is a Red Stripe Tall Boy for only $2. They have corn hole, giant Connect Four and bocce ball games. There is just something for everyone.

The Breakfast Club

Published by Tybee Concierge under Tybee Restaurants, Where to Eat

Recently I blogged about the locals’ favorites on Tybee. Re-reading my blog, I was horrified to know that I left out The Breakfast Club. Daggars! The Horror of it! How could I forget this wonderful icon?

The Breakfast Club is THE place to go for breakfast. Their menu is so great, it’s tough to choose. They have just about any kind of omelet you’d ever want; they specialize in waffles and pancakes; eggs and any combination thereof. They have great dishes with great names. There’s the Grill Cleaner’s Special, a healthy portion of diced potatoes, Polish sausage, green peppers and onions, scrambled with 2 eggs, topped with melted Monterey Jack and American Cheese; grits and toast, too.  What a meal–what a name! It’s one of their best sellers.

Love steak? They have a couple of meals with those including one called the South Sider Steak Sandwich – a seven oz. hand-cut steak, served open-faced on an English muffin, topped with grilled onions and mushrooms with your choise of potato. YES!

Locals swear the burgers here are THE best on the Island. I’ve never had ‘em, just can’t miss their breakfasts, but they must be great. Over a half-pound of lean ground beef served on a fresh baked bun with lettuce, tomato and pickle with your choice of potato.

The point is that you can’t go wrong at the Breakfast Club. They’ll be a line, so be ready. Hours are 7:00 am to 1:00 pm.

Favorites of the Locals – Tybee Island

Published by Tybee Concierge under Tybee Restaurants, Where to Eat

As a concierge, I get all kinds of questions. Where are the best junk shops? Where are the boats that will take you shelling? Are there storage units on Tybee? Where can I find a babysitter? And I’m glad to say we have answers for all.

The one question I get more than any other, though, is “where do the locals go?” Now every local will have their own favorite spots, but my opinion on where we like to go (I am a local) is as follows. These are the ones I hear locals speak about all the time.

Huc-a-poos- by far a local favorite. They have the largest pieces of pizza I’ve ever seen anywhere , and they have some delectable wraps. There’s an outdoor area for seating, a children’s corner, a cornhole game (they have tournaments here, too), great beer and drinks at affordable prices. There’s free parking, friendly servers, and friendly people. A local always sees someone they know, and you can be dressed up or in your comfortable clothes and feel fine either way. The owner, Eric, is a nice, good guy who contributes to the community and is as friendly as they come. Cute, too.

Doc’s Bar-  I’d be committing a huge crime by not putting Doc’s on our list. It is by far the most popular, oldest, hangout of local Tybee-ites. There are some people that have been going there so often, and for so many years, that they are local celebrities. Ms. Sylvia is one of those. She’s way up in years (celebrated her 100th recently at Doc’s), plays and sings a little when in the bar every weekend. Doc’s is full of friendly people, music where locals sit in and sing a song or two, pool tables, and history.

The Quarter Bar- this wonderfully crazy place has THE best burgers on the island. I don’t know what they do to them (and maybe I don’t want to know) but they are terrific. Whenever my husband is having a bad day, I just mention, “let’s go to the Quarter,” and he’s alive again. A while back, they had underwear hanging all over the main room, but they “cleaned up.” It’s creeping back though; you just don’t want to ruin a good atmosphere. It’s part of what makes The Quarter so lovable; that and the friendly “upper echelon”  locals who all hang out there. The back room has several pool tables and there are TV’s all over so no big game or sporting event is missed. During football season you have noisy and friendly bantering for the favorites. Great.

Cafe Loco’s- There probably isn’t one permanent resident on Tybee that doesn’t know Joel, owner of Cafe Loco’s, his wife April, or his two adorable children. They are often at the restaurant and bring a warm and family feeling to the establishment. Cafe Loco is on the Lazaretto Creek and you can watch the sunset while sipping great Loco drinks and eating their good food. Their specialty is wings, but anything they serve is good. They happen to be next to Captain Mike’s Dolphin Tours–a local icon–so you can do the tour and have lunch or dinner both together. Parking is free in their lot. Loco’s has great music and often brings in some name-bands (Drivin’ and Cryin’) for an evening or two. Marsh and Creek views with the sun going down–beautiful!

Sundae Cafe – locals all know that coming to Sundae Cafe for lunch is the ticket. You get a lot of food for an affordable price. Their special for the day is where the best bargains are, and no matter when you eat here, the food is absolutely wonderful. And for many, their simpler items are the best–chicken salad, the pecan green salad, meatloaf–and the desserts, oh my gosh! It’s unpretentious, warm, friendly and just plain good!

The American Legion- every town has one and Tybee’s lucky to have their own Post 154. Housed in an old gymnasium belonging to Ft. Screven, the Legion is the “everyman” hangout. There’s bingo on Friday nights, horseshoe tournaments on Saturday, line dancing on Wed., Karaoke every Sunday, music, and you can rent the Legion for a dance, wedding or family reunion. The drinks run freely, patriotism is alive and well, and everyone can find a friend at the Legion.

Those are the top local  places that most residents go to. There are other favorites, and some will argue with my choices here; but no matter where you go on Tybee, you will be assured of a good meal, friendly people, and a happy time.
