 Among the most anticipated events in 2011 is the Critz Tybee Run – Half Marathon • 5 K, which will take place on Saturday, February 5, 2011.

The Critz Tybee Run promises to be an exciting event for everyone involved. The race events kick-off with packet pick-up and Fleet Feet Expo, which will take place at the Ocean Plaza Conference Center on Friday, February 4 from 9:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. Race day packet pick-up for the Half Marathon will also be held at the Ocean Plaza Conference Center from 6:30 – 8:15 a.m. The Half Marathon race starts at 8:30 a.m. Race day packet pick-up for the 5K will be at the Historic Tybee Lighthouse from 6:30 – 7:30 a.m. The 5K race starts at 8:00 a.m.

The Half Marathon will start on Butler Avenue at 15th street. The 5K race will start at the historic Tybee Lighthouse. In the spirit of Tybee Island participants are encouraged to dress in their wackiest costumes and beach attire while they run or walk. The finish line for both races will be on Tybrisa (16th) Street facing the beautiful Atlantic Ocean and Tybee Island Pier. Following the two runs there will be a great post-race party with plenty of food, drink, music, awards and all-around fun!

Registration for the Critz Tybee Run is currently available through February 4. The cost of registering between now and December 4 is $30 for the Half Marathon and $20 for the 5K run. The cost of registering from December 5 through January 15 is $38 for the Half Marathon and $28 for the 5K run.

From January 17 through February 4 the cost is $45 for the Half Marathon and $35 for the 5k run. If you register at the Expo on February 4, the cost is $50 for the Half Marathon and $40 for the 5k run. There will be no race day registration. The Vacation Rentals Managers Association (VRMA) will meet October 31st through November 3rd and Tybee Vacation Rentals staff will attend.  The annual meeting, titled Innovate. Navigate. Collaborate introduces innovations to revolutionize the vacation rental business, and  navigates the current economy to present ideas to collaborate and strengthen the industry. The conference also provides concrete solutions and tips for increasing revenue and improving the bottom line.

In their efforts to provide the best service and quality management, Tybee Vacation Rentals sends many of their employees to this conference. Staff learns marketing strategies, the newest ideas in technology applications, new technology itself, housekeeping/maintenance and concierge service ideas and products, the latest in rental property laws and rules, and ideas concerning management issues–in other words, fresh perspectives and current trends on vacation rental management.

The results are in for the turtle count on Tybee for 2010. Here is the data:

–Tybee had 11 nests; 6 were relocated to safer environments.
–It was estimated that Tybee had 1,035 eggs.
–Only 9 eggs were lost.
–Experts estimate that 807 eggs hatched.
–There were 678 emerged hatchlings with only 9 false crawls.**

The Island is thrilled with the numbers and our volunteers and staff did an excellent job of counting our turtle statistics and keeping the turtles safe. In fact, this is the first year I didn’t see any turtles (alive or dead) on the Tybee Road.

Once turtles hatch they have a hard road ahead, dodging predators, going the right way, getting food and generally staying alive, so every turtle that hatches helps guarantee that at least some will make it and become full-fledged adults–a plus for everyone.

Have you tried the new Social restaurant yet? It is fun and different, and the food is great. I would call it a California style menu, with some items served in smaller sizes (let’s you try a couple of things) and sandwiches served in a wrap. They have an large outdoor deck (covered) that is just delightful and the best white and red Sangria you’d ever want to have.  

The other great thing about Social is that they have something happening every night. Here’s the rundown:

Monday – Monday Night Football
Tuesday – Bingo at the Bar (prizes)
Wednesday – Wino Wednesdays (tastings and specials)
Thursday – Theatre Thursday (outdoor movie night)
Friday – Live Fridays (featuring an array of musicians)
Saturday – Oyster roasts and Saturday nite football
Sunday – Sunday Funday (open Bible & NFL, Jason Bible, that is)

Seven days a week starting at 6:00 pm there are margaritas 2 for 1; and one of the drink specialties is a Red Stripe Tall Boy for only $2. They have corn hole, giant Connect Four and bocce ball games. There is just something for everyone.

The lights on the Par 3 golf course at Crosswinds will be running till 9:30 PM every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday night.  We will also have the Driving Range Lights running until 9:30 PM all three nights.  We will continue to run the lights on these dates and during these times until we see a change in the usage.

Please note that range balls can be purchased until 9:00 PM.
All the lights on the Par 3 golf course and the driving range will be turned off promptly at 9:30 PM.  Players still hitting balls or who are on the Par 3 course will be asked to come in.  No refunds will be granted to players who start the Par 3 after 8:30 PM or who purchase balls after 9:00 PM.  Thank you for your attention to this and we hope that you enjoy Crosswinds under the lights.
