Coastal Heritage Society – July 4th

Published by Tybee Concierge under Activities, Educational Activities, Kids and Families

COASTAL HERITAGE SOCIETY – June 28, 2010 IT WAS GREAT – LOOK FOR NEXT YEAR’S EVENT

Independence Day celebration for the Family!

Did you know there was a Revolutionary War battle fought in Savannah? The Coastal Heritage Society invites the public to join us to celebrate Savannah’s role in the fight for independence with two days of fun family activities at two very historic sites on Saturday, July 3, 10am to 5pm and Saturday, July 4, noon to 5pm. Park the car once and spend your day downtown at the historic Battlefield park to learn about the 1779 Siege of Savannah with musket firings, check out real artifacts from the battle at the Savannah History Museum, catch a ride on the steam locomotive train ride at the Roundhouse Railroad Museum, and enjoy a delicious brunch or lunch at the Whistle Stop Café. Special activities for children, including colonial games and art projects, will be offered at the Roundhouse on Sunday, July 4th only. Step into the shoes of a historic soldier by trying on period uniforms, cannon and musket firings, and learning about life as a Civil War soldier.

Old Fort Jackson, the Savannah History Museum, the Roundhouse Railroad Museum, and Battlefield Park are operated by the Coastal Heritage Society, a non profit organization that preserves two National Historic Landmarks. The mission of the Coastal Heritage Society is to preserve the cultural heritage of coastal Georgia and adjacent regions and to provide relevant educational experiences for the public.

The public is invited to attend and regular admission to each of the museums is charged. For more information, please contact the Roundhouse Railroad Museum at 912.651.6823 or Old Fort Jackson at 912.232.3945, or check out our website at www.chsgeorgia.org.

Tybee Named Better Home Town

Published by Tybee Concierge under Awards

The City of Tybee Island, Georgia, is extremely pleased to announce the designation of Tybee Island as a Better Home Town Community under the Georgia Main Street Program.

A statement from the Georgia’s Department of Community Affairs noted, “The state Main Street program is delighted to welcome Tybee Island into our program. The city has demonstrated that they understand Main Street principles, and their board and volunteers are doing an outstanding job in supporting small businesses and job creation in the community.”

Tybee Mayor Jason Buelterman was enthusiastic about achieving Better Home Town status. “This is a wonderful distinction for our community and a testament to the hard work and dedication of many Tybee volunteers and City staff members. We look forward to continuing our work as we strive to become a more favorable climate in which to live and operate businesses.”  “I am extremely proud to have the opportunity to work with the City of Tybee, business owners and residents who have joined together to make becoming a Better Hometown Community a reality,” Ms. Morton said after receiving notification of acceptance. “The volunteer attitude on the Island is truly amazing, and the efforts to work as a team continue to prove successful! Receiving the designation is validation of the work by many to maintain the quality of life through a healthy business corridor and to enhance the cultural experience while preserving this barrier island’s heritage.”

Congratulations to Chantel Morton, our Better Hometown Coordinator, to Jonathan Lynn, director of Tybee’s Economic Development Department, to the Better Hometown Board of Directors, and to Mayor, Council, staff, and volunteers – we all knew already that Tybee is a Better Home Town!
