SCAD Sand Art Festival

Published by Tybee Concierge under Activities, Kids and Families

If you love art, you will LOVE what happens at Tybee’s north Beach every April–the Savannah College of Art and Design’s Sand Art Festival.

The event is a competition for students and faculty to build the most outlandish, beautiful, gigantic, breathtaking sand sculptures, reliefs and wind scupltures using just sand and beach objects. From giant lizards, to beautiful mermaids, the students’ imaginations take the grains of sand and make art. This FREE event is outstanding–a must for everyone. Competition begins early in the day and judging takes place approximately 2:30. But hurry to see them–they are destroyed with the tide, gone forever.

Every April- FREE – begins about 9:00 am at the North Beach area.

The Annual Turtle Trot-5K Beach Run

Published by Tybee Concierge under Activities, Fitness, Kids and Families

Every spring, there is a fund raiser for the Tybee Island Sea Turtle Project and Kick-off for Coastal Georgia’s Sea Turtle Nesting Season: the turtle trot-5K beach run. Registration and information can be obtained through the Marine Science Center – 866.557.9172 or at TybeeMarineScience.org.

Award

Awards are given to the top three male and female finishers. After the race, the GEORGIA SEA TURTLE CENTER  releases a Loggerhead Sea Turtle patient back to the ocean!

During nesting season, May to October, Loggerhead Sea Turtles nest on our beach. Females dig their nest, lay eggs, and head back to the ocean. In 60 days, the babies hatch and, on their own, make their way across the beach and out to the sea.

Sea Turtle Project volunteers conduct daily dawn patrols to check for turtle nesting activity that occurred during the night. When we find a nest, we evaluate the site and nests below the high tide line are relocated. To protect the nest, we mark off the site and then monitor it daily. Prior to the hatch date (60 days), we start “nest sitting.” When the Ping-Pong ball-sized eggs hatch and the hatchlings emerge from the nest (called a boil), we watch over them as they make their way across the beach and into the sea.

Tybee Wine Festival

Published by Tybee Concierge under Activities, Food/Produce

The Friends of Tybee Theater hosted the 2nd annual Tybee Wine Festival on the grounds of the Tybee Lighthouse.  They also sponsored An Evening with Oysters and Wine at Marlin Monroe’s.

The Wine festival featured over 100 international wines and tapas from the islands best restaurants, and this year they added Craft Beers and a silent auction. This event is an annual fund raiser for the Tybee Post Theatre– the old Ft. Screven theater built in 1930 and used by the military for their entertainment. After the fort closed, the theater remained unused for many years and became rundown. A local group known as the Friends of the Tybee Theater formed to raise money to bring it back to its former glory, and now the Wine Festival generates a hearty amount of funds for the restoration.

At the Lighthouse Grounds on Meddin Drive, the Festival served over 100 wines from around the world as well as Continue Reading »
