Grandparents Paradise
I am a grandparent, and those of you who are also grandparents know that nothing’s too good for our grandchildren. We’ll spend far more than we mean to to get just the right gift, take just the right trip, or do just the right activity for our beloved grandchildren.
Tybee Island, Georgia is the IDEAL grandchildren’s paradise. We have THE BEACH, but we have far more. For example:
–THE BEACH – just renourished, it is clean, beautiful, has waves for mini-surfers (our mayor even surfs), has easy access to restaurants and restrooms, and is generally just wonderful for all ages.
–FT. PULASKI – right at the entrance to Tybee, this fort is fun for all ages. There’s a movie about it, there are cannons and they are fired every weekend, there are gun demonstrations, the kids can climb up on the walls, they can visit the barracks, they can go into the demilune tunnels, they can go over the bridge and see the gators sunning themselves on the moat edges, they can see the old cannonballs in the sides of the walls, they can visit the prison, and the shop has some cool kids stuff for souvenirs.
–THE MARINE SCIENCE CENTER- This wonderful “aquarium” has many varied fish and wildlife found on Tybee. There’s a touch-tank where kids can actually handle marine life. The Center offers wonderful beach discovery walks for all ages, letting the kids “discover” critters found in and around the sand and sea.
–TYBEE LIGHTHOUSE – the oldest and tallest Lighthouse in Georgia is a thrill to climb for any age. There are 178 steps, and kids can buy a certificate after they’ve climbed to hang on their wall. Kids love it! The out-buildings might be a bit too “slow” for small ages, but the grounds are interesting and they have a cannon. Plus there are kitties running around.
–DOLPHIN TOUR – My favorite on Tybee, take your grandchildren on the 1 1/2 hour dolphin tour. You always see dolphins and the boat ride is fun–what kid doesn’t like a boat ride!
–TYBRISA – we have a wonderful candy shop, a couple of ice cream parlors, and tourist shops that aren’t too expensive–it’s a paradise for grandparents and grandchildren.
–BIKING/HIKING – rent some bikes and go on our safe trails; walk in the woods at Pulaski; walk and see the birds on the bird trails.
–OATLAND ISLAND (ZOO) – I call it the zoo even though it is a wildlife center. Visit the animals out in the wild; walk on the wooden trails and see the exhibits in the exhibit building. There are wolves (fabulous and they come right up to the window), cheetahs, bison, alligators, birds of all kinds, bears, and so on.
–THE CRAB SHACK – A great place for kids–see the alligator pit, the wild birds and the kitties. On the water, Crab Shack has a Jimmy Buffet feel and they have a kids menu.
–SAVANNAH – just 20 min. away, Savannah is considered one of the top ten most beautiful and historical cities to visit in the U.S. It’s a walking/stroller city OR you can ride the trolley or free shuttle buses.
–THE RAILROAD MUSEUM – Fabulous railroad exhibit–kids can actually go into the trains, ride on the turntable, see a train display and watch the ancient huge machines work as they did in days of old.
–THE BATTLEGROUND SITE – A great climbing place. Kids can see the site of the horrific Revolutionary War battle and climb into the bunker.
–THE VISITOR’S MUSEUM – see the movie about Savannah and visit the history museum, which includes Forrest Gumps Bench.
–RIVER STREET – kids love this place as there’s room to run, there are shops and restaurants, candy stores, and one can view the ships that come into the harbor. You can also take the short ferry ride across to Hutchinson Island.
–CARRIAGE RIDE – kids love horses, and you can rent the carriage and take a leisurely stroll through town.
–THE MIGHTY EIGHTH AIR FORCE MUSEUM – this wonderful museum is great for kids. They actually sit in a bunker and see what it was like for the bombers in WWII. They can go into the planes, use the gunners, see the exhibits which are everywhere, creating a dazzling effect for little eyes.
As you can see, grandparents have a wide variety of things to do with the grandkids and there’s much more. Consider a trip to Tybee and Savannah with the grandkids.
