China Painting Comes to Tybee

Published by Tybee Concierge under Art/Music

It all started last February with a sign at the Guard House. It said “China Painting.” My curiosity was aroused. Were there people from China painting in the Guard House? Were people painting on china plates? Was there a new painting class and I missed it?

Being a member of the Tybee Arts Association, I couldn’t imagine a painting experience not being known to all the members. I called the number and got Stacye Jarrell of Oceanfront Rentals. Stacey explained that this was the second year of a yearly art school featuring WORLD renowned painters of china objects. “Have you got some time?” she said. “I’ll take you and show you what this is about.” I grabbed Rebecca Rice and Denise Vernon of the TAA and off we went.

Wow! That’s about all I can say about the wonderment we discovered. We first visited a “studio” where a gentleman was teaching painting on china plates. Evidently you put a layer of paint on, fire it, paint on, fire it and so forth until the plate is finished. Stacey had 5 kilns on her property to take care of Continue Reading »

Pecan Pie

Published by Tybee Concierge under Recipes

The holidays just wouldn’t be the holidays without the wonderful pies. My favorite is Pecan Pie, and I have had, through the years, a myriad of recipes for them. Here is my favorite. It comes from a WONDERFUL cooking magazine called Cook’s Country. If you love to cook, and you like recipes that are easy, but well done, I highly recommend you get a subscription to this delectable cooking magazine.

Old-Fashioned Pecan Pie

1 -  C maple syrup
1 –  C packed light brown sugar
1/2  – C heavy cream
1 –  T molasses
4 – T unsalted butter, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
1/2 – t salt
6 large egg yolks, lightly beaten
1 1/2 – C pecans, toasted and chopped
1 – 9-inch unbaked pie shell, chilled in pie plate for 30 min.

Make Filling – Adjust oven rack to lowest position and heat oven to 450 degrees. Heat syrup, sugar, cream, and molasses in saucepan over med. heat, stirring occasionally, until sugar dissolves, about 3 min. Remove from heat and let cool 5 min. Whisk butter and salt into syrup mix until combined. Whisk in egg yolks until incorporated.

Bake Pie – Scatter pecans in pie shell. Carefully pour filling over. Place pie in hot oven and immediately reduce oven temp. to 325 degrees. Bake until filling is set and center jiggles slightly when pie is gently shaken, 45 to 60 min. Cool pie on rack for 1 hour, then refrigerate until set, about 3 hours and up to 1 day. Bring to room temp. before serving.

Star Castle Activities

Published by Tybee Concierge under Activities, Kids and Families

Star Castle has offered family entertainment for more than 20 years. Its two main features are a 10,000 square-foot roller skating rink and a 4,000 square foot laser tag arena. The roller rink features a high-gloss maple floor, state-of-the-art lighting, and a live disc jockey who keeps the mood lively by playing hit music. Star Castle even has a skating pro shop, offering custom roller skates and replacement parts.

If laser tag is your game, get a team together and head on over for some friendly competition. The Lasertron* maze is composed of glowing, blacklit columns. The are no sharp corners or edges, providing a safe experience for people of all ages. Up to 20 players can compete at a time, making this high-tech game of cat-and-mouse a hit with groups large and small. Those who don’t want to play can watch the action from their viewing room. Laser tag is not only fun (and good exercise), but a great team-building event. www.starcastle.info .**
