Updated Parking Information for Tybee Island, GA

Published by Tybee Concierge at 1:04 pm under Destination Information, Services, Travel Tips

Parking. It’s always an issue, especially in Savannah and on Tybee Island. Only about 2 x 3 miles, Tybee Island just doesn’t have gobs of room for cars. We do our best to accommodate our guests, but it’s tough. The basic thing to know is that all parking on Tybee must be paid for, 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, 365 days a year. You must find a Pay-&-Display station, buy your parking receipt and put it in your window. This way, if you move around the island, your parking will be paid no matter where you go.

Here are the details concerning parking on Tybee.

Parking Paradigm in Paradise

Since parking is so important to keeping the island in good condition for your next visit, there are no free, public parking spaces on Tybee, and parking fees are enforced 8AM – 8PM, 365 days a year! A few spots still have meters, though most parking places are converted to Pay-&-Display parking.

When you park, be sure to find the nearest Pay-&-Display station, purchase time at the station, and place your receipt in a secure and prominently visible place on your dash. If you have received a parking citation, you may pay in person at City Hall, over the phone by calling 786-4573×102, or online by clicking the Online Payments link to the left.

Tybee offers many public parking sites and metered spaces for your convenience.

South Beach Parking Lots: Beachfront lots between 14th and 18th Streets, adjacent to the main beach business district and the Parker Pier and Pavilion. These lots are reached by travelling down 14th Street or Tybrisa. Pay & Display meter system is used.

North Beach Parking Lot: Beachfront lot in Fort Screven immediately across from the Tybee Island Lighthouse. Pay & Display meter system is used.

Dune crossovers: Most of the streets adjacent to beach access points have public parking available, either with a Pay and Display system located on the block, or with parking meters.

Parking meters: Some of the streets on Tybee still have only parking meters installed, and not all meters have been updated to $1.50 per hour – some still only cost 25 cents per 15 minutes, but they are becoming more scarce. Expect to pay 20 cents per 15 minutes.

To Pay With Cash: Pay and Display rates, island-wide, are 25 cents for 10 minutes. Machines will accept nickels, dimes, quarters, and dollar coins.

  1. Insert coins in slot for time desired.
  2. Press print button.
  3. Pull receipt from slot and display on dashboard.

To Pay With Debit/Credit Card: Minimum charge amount is $3.00.

  1. Press blue button (+), press again to add more time (adds $1.50 at a time.)
  2. When desired time is reached, press green button (P) to confirm transaction.
  3. Insert and remove credit card as shown on machine.
  4. Pull receipt from hinged slot area and display on dashboard.

Multi-day passes can be purchased at the Pay-and-Display machines by adding hours till 8:00 p.m. of the current day.  Additional days can be purchased by adding $18.00 at a time, to a maximum of three days.

Any machine can be used to purchase your time. You may park anywhere on the island with your receipt until your time expires. Your Pay-and-Display receipt is also honored at the meters.

Decal parking: Decals may be purchased from the cashier at Tybee City Hall at 403 Butler Avenue for $100.00 each (cash, credit cards or personal check), and are valid for one year from month of purchase. Tybee residents whose vehicles are registered to Tax District 3 may receive a free decal by presenting the paid auto tag license receipt to the cashier at Tybee City Hall. Decals must be affixed to the driver’s side windshield to be considered valid; decals on the dash are ignored! Cars with decals may park at any legal parking space, including public parking lots, at no additional charge.

If you have any questions, or if you wish to dispute a parking ticket, please feel free to contact the City of Tybee Island Parking Services at City Hall, 403 Butler Avenue, or by calling 912 786-4573, extension 135. City Hall is open from 7:30 AM til 5 PM, Monday through Friday, and from 9 AM til 2 PM on Saturday. Tickets may be paid online at www.cityoftybee.org, by telephone at (912)786-4573×102, or in person at City Hall.
