McQueen’s Island Historic Trail-Tybee Island, GA

Published by Tybee Concierge under Activities, Kids and Families, Travel Tips

There isn’t any better hiking or biking than along the water or marshland. Tybee Island, GA offers one of the best trails in the area, The McQueen’s Island Trail-part of the nationwide effort known as the Rails Into Trails program to transform abandoned railroad lines into recreational areas.

Just refurbished, the palm-lined trail is part of the old Savannah-Tybee Railroad Historic and Scenic route where the trains brought rich Savannahians to the Tybee beach. The railroad line, something of an engineering miracle at the time, was built in the 1880s over 17.7 miles of salt marsh, rivers and tidal creeks, and it stretched from eastern Savannah to Tybee Island. The first regularly scheduled run ran in July of 1887 and continued until the 1930’s.

Established in 1991, the trail is 6 miles long, and runs parallel to the south channel of the Savannah River. A 3-mile section of that trail has been stabilized and resurfaced by the Chatham county Public Works and Park Services Department who used bags filled with oyster shells to make the path stronger. The oyster shells eventually will mold together naturally through calcification to block further erosion.

The trail is outfitted with 18 fitness stations and 30 wooden picnic tables. Call 912-786-5853 for more information.

“Staycation” Now Official!

Published by Tybee Concierge under Activities, Kids and Families, Travel Tips

The dictionary has just added a new word: staycation. For those of you who haven’t heard the term, it is a word that means “a vacation spent at home or nearby.” In these rough economic times more people are desiring a vacation but don’t have the funds to travel far. They stay somewhere close by (or at home), cook in to avoid big restaurant prices, go to a beach or park where costs are minimal, and generally keep costs low.

The dictionary determined that “staycations” have become so popular, they could not ignore them, so the term became part of the 100 new words added to the latest edition of the Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary.

Tybee Island is a great place for a “staycation” if you live in Georgia, South Carolina or Florida. We have the beach which is free, properties that have equipped kitchens for cooking in the house; properties with large screens and DVD’s for movie watching; low cost attractions such as Ft. Pulaski ($3) and the Marine Science Center ($4/$3); and Savannah only 20 min. away (one of the most beautiful cities to visit in the US).

Tybee Vacation Rentals has over 140 properties, with some 40 pet-friendly, that include cottages, condos, and houses; on or off the beach, marsh and back river, sleeping as little as 2 or as many as 16!

There isn’t any reason why you can’t have a vacation. Call us today for your staycation. 912-786-5853.
