Hurricane Safety – 2010

Published by Tybee Concierge under Destination Information, Safety Tips

The hurricane season is June 1st to November 1st. Unless you have a boat, there is only one way in and out of Tybee and that is Hwy 80–the Tybee Road. If a storm is coming, make sure you pay attention to the weather reports, either by weather radio, TV or regular radio. Tybee Vacation Rentals will also post the latest information at http://tybeeconcierge.com/storm-update/.

IF THERE IS A MANDATORY EVACUATION, LEAVE!!!

With only one way off the island, it is imperative that you leave immediately. Traffic will be heavy, and even worse once you get into the Savannah environs. You’ll need all the time you can get to get to safety.

Sirens will sound when ANY type of bad weather is expected. We can have tornados here and damaging storms, so pay close attention. If you hear the sirens, take cover immediately.

Tybee Vacation Rentals will do our best to notify you if there is an evacuation, but do not hesitate to leave.

Easy Appetizer

Published by Tybee Concierge under Recipes

You’re here and  you are having company off and on all weekend. What to do! Here’s a very quick and easy appetizer that you can have ready anytime, and it keeps for a month.

Jezebel Sauce

Mix the following together:

1 jar (18 oz.) Apple Jelly
1 jar (18 oz. ) Pineapple Preserves
1 small can dry mustard (I only do half)
Horseradish to taste (anywhere from 1/4 C to 1/2C depending on how hot you like it)
Pepper

Refrigerate and when ready to serve, pour over a brick of cream cheese.  Wallah! This mix also works well as a sauce for chicken or pork. Yum!

The Tybee Tour Now on CD

Published by Tybee Concierge under Activities, Tours

Did you know that there is a tour of Tybee? It was developed from a myriad of sources including Linda Odom’s Tales of the South script, several books on Tybee Island, numerous newspaper articles, Teri Grundel’s ecology notes, Internet resources, and it’s been checked by Cullen Chambers—our major guru on Tybee history.  Many people are surprised to learn that the tour takes about four hours if you stop to see the Lighthouse, Ft. Pulaski and the Marine Science Center. “What can you possibly say about Tybee that would take a whole 4 hours,” said one person. Whoa! Tybee’s packed full of history, ecology, mystery, and it’s even said to be haunted! It’s all in the tour.
When I first put this tour together, we tried to run it by trolley, much like Savannah; but to pay the driver, tour guide, gas, insurance (atrocious!) and such, we would have had to charge

Sea Camp

Published by Tybee Concierge under Activities, Kids and Families, Uncategorized

What a wonderful opportunity for kids and families–the Tybee Island Marine Science Center’s Sea Camp. Every summer the Center will offer a myriad of camps for kids from age 4 upwards through 6th grade. The camps have such fun names, such as Coastal Critters, Seq Squirts, Peanut Butter and Jellyfish and Small and Spineless, and they run from June  through August (dates to be announced).  They are taught by staff marine science educators or certified teachers and the class size is limited to 15.

Contact Karen by phone (912.786.5917) or by e-mail at KRhodes@tybeemarinescience.org. Happy camping!

Party Meatballs Recipe

Published by Tybee Concierge under Recipes, Services

There are many meatball recipes, I know, but these are outstanding, easy and make 7 dozen. You can fix a batch up and have them on hand for the weekend. Enjoy.

Party Meatballs                                      Sauce

2 eggs, beten                                           2 Cups ketchup
1  12-oz. can evaporated milk                  1-1/2 cups packed brown sugar
2 cups quick cooking oats                        1/2 cup chopped onion
1 cup finely chopped onion
2 t salt
2 t chili powder
1/2 t garlic powder
1/2 t pepper
3 lbs. ground beef

In a large bowl, combine all ingredients but the beef. Crumble beef over mix and mix well. Shape into 1″ balls and place in greased 13 x 9 in. baking dishes.  Make sauce and pour over meatballs. Bake, uncovered at 325 degrees for 1 hour or until meat is done. Makes about 7 dozen.
