Summertime is Here
Officially summer doesn’t begin until June, but anyone living on Tybee knows it starts with the Beach Bum Parade. It’s also starting to get hot, hot, hot. That’s summer. It’s time to be reminded of the safety issues regarding the beach.
Tybee Beach Rules – Don’t get kicked off the beach (or Tybee) because you did something illegal. Go to BEACH RULES to know what the do’s and don’t’s are for being on the beach.
MIND YOUR MANNERS. – Do what the lifeguards say. Your life or someone elses might depend on it. Don’t play your music so loud that it disturbs others. Don’t be lewd with your behavior. Our beaches are FAMILY beaches and you need to be mindful of the kids.
WATCH YOUR LANGUAGE. Again, we are families. Foul language is not appreciated in public especially when kids are around.
WEAR SUN PROTECTION. It is so easy to get burned at the beach. Even on a cooler day, the sun can be brutal. Wear sunscreen at all time–even walking on the Strand or Tybrisa. Make sure your product protects against ultraviolet A (UVA) rays and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays. UVA rays go deep into the skin, causing skin cancer. UVB rays are to blame for sunburns as they affect just the top layers of skin. BOTH types of rays cause Photoaging, which results in fine lines & wrinkles. You need a minimum of SPF 30 and you should go up to a higher SPF when playing tennis, golfing, walking or exercising in the sun. Experts say to reapply screen every 2 hours–even if it’s waterproof. For the kids, make sure they have hats, protective clothing, plenty of water, and cover ups. They say that when the temperature climbs higher than 95 degrees, kids under age 5 should not stay out in the sun for more than 45 min.
WEAR SUNGLASSES. – Our poor eyes have to do a lot of work and they can get damaged by too much sun. Protect them with glasses that are 100 percent UV protected.
WATCH RIP CURRENTS. Our currents can easily pull you off your feet and send you out in the big blue. If you get caught in one, don’t try to swim against it!!! Ride it out by diving out or swim parallel to the current and the shore until you can swim in.
TIDES & SANDBARS- Stay away from the sandbars where posted. Tides can come in swiftly (within a matter of minutes) cutting you off from the mainland. Then you are really stuck. The tides can also be swift enough to knock you down and carry you off.
JELLYFISH – Tybee Vacation Rentals has some great stuff called Jellyfish Squish. If stung, this product can give you relief from the sting and itch. Jellyfish are prevalent in warmer waters so July and August are their most prolific months. Ask the lifeguards if the jellyfish are in the area and watch your children.
DRINK PLENTY OF FLUIDS. That means water, really. Alcohol can dehydrate you, so stick with teas, water and related drinks.
BRING YOUR PARAPHANALIA. Bring chairs, music, toys, a good book, towels, drinks and snacks. Don’t forget a clock. It’s easy to lose track of time when at the beach.
PARKING. – You will need to pay for your parking no matter where you park when on Tybee. Click here for the parking costs and regulations. Parking.
