Polar Bear Plunge
Shiver me timbers…..Tybee hosted the Polar bear plunge on January 1st on the Pier and was it a hoot! Some 1,000 participants braved the 54 degree temperature to take a dip in the mightly Atlantic. “I Invigorated my soul,” said one participant, “it was the best way to start the new year off.” There were sharks, gorillas, grandmas, babies, a congressman and they came from all over. Screams of delight (or agony) could be heard by the hundreds of people packed on the pier, watching the spectacle. “It made me cold just lookin’ at them,” said one watcher. “One guy was in his underwear and I couldn’t believe it.”
This event has become a Tybee tradition, held every January 1st at noon at the Pier on the south end of the island. Plan to be with us next year, invigorating your soul with a cleansing (and cold) plunge into the Atlantic.
