The Sand Plan – Tybee Beach Renourishment
In 2008 The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers pumped 1.2 million cubic yards of sand–enough to fill 750 football fields a foot deep–onto Tybee’s beaches. This high-quality sand came from nearby, about a mile and a half offshore, so it was a close match to our original sand, safe for native plants and animals. We perform this feat every 6-10 years as we need to “feed” the beaches with sand to combat the erosion from storms and the sea.
This work allows our beaches to offer more room for sunning, strolling and seabird and turtle nesting, plus people, plants and animals are safer, AND there are a myriad of new shells, sharks’ teeth and other exciting finds.
Tybee is committed to continuing our renourishment when needed every 6-10 years for the betterment of the community AND our guests.
