The Sand Plan - Tybee Beach Renourishment

Published by Tybee Concierge under Beach Blog, Ecotourism

Over the next four months or so the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will pump 1.2 million cubic yards of sand–enough to fill 750 football fields a foot deep–onto Tybee’s beaches. This high-quality sand will come from nearby, about a mile and a half offshore. So it will be a close match to our original sand, safe for native plants and animals. We perform this feat every 6-10 years as we need to “feed” the beaches with sand to combat the erosion from storms and the sea.

Approved by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, a 320-foot dredge with an 11,300-h.p. motor will suck sand up from the ocean floor, then pump it onto the beach. The sand comes onto the beach at great force through 30-inch wide pipes. You’ll see the huge pipes spewing sand noisily onto the beach, with the force of an avalanche. It will take about 50 people, working around the clock for up to 4 months to get all the sand in place.

THE EQUIPMENT AND ONRUSHING SAND CAN VE VERY DANGEROUS, SO BE SURE TO STAY OUT OF THE WORK AREAS, WHICH WILL BE CLEARLY MARKED, AT ALL TIMES.

The project has begun at 7th Street and will continue in phases until about February 2009. Parking lots on 14th and 16th/Tybrisa Streets will remain open, however some other streets, parking areas and beaches will be closed temporarily as the work progresses.

When the work is done, our beaches will offer more room for sunning, strolling and seabird and turtle nesting, plus people, plants and animals will be safer, AND there will likely be thousands of new shells, sharks’ teeth and other exciting finds.

Schedule
Phase 1 - Gulick St. to 7th St.
Phase 2 - 7th St. to 12 St.
Phase 3 - 12th St. to 16th/Tybrisa Sts.
Phase 4 - 16th/Tybrisa Sts. to 19th St.
