Restrooms at the Beach

Published by Tybee Concierge under Beach Blog, Services

Spending a day at the beach should be pleasant without having to search for a restroom. Portable restrooms can be found at many of the dune crossovers along the island beaches, and accessible restrooms are also provided at the north beach parking lot. There is a portable, ADA-compliant, air-conditioned restroom in the 18th Street parking lot at the south beach, and concrete restrooms on the north beach behind the museum.

Rip Currents

Published by Tybee Concierge under Beach Blog, Safety Tips

Often Tybee Island will experience rip currents produced by waves and generated by storms out at sea. The weather may be fine, but rip currents could be lurking and dangerous. You can even see them if you look as the water is more “ripply.” These currents are very powerful, and if you’re stuck in one, it can pull you out to sea. Here is some information about what to do if you get caught in one.

Your first reaction will be to panic and try to fight the current. DO NOT FIGHT IT! Try and remember to calm down–tell yourself to relax–float on your back for a bit to get yourself in control.

Swim perpendicular to the current. You will feel a change once you are able to begin heading for the shore, then start to slowly swim to shore. You should be able to get back, but if you’re still having trouble, swim perpendicular some more until you are beyond it. Then swim toward the shore.

Rip currents can kill you if you aren’t careful. But if you are caught in one, don’t panic. You’ll make it if you stay calm and THINK.

Awesome and It’s Free!

Published by Tybee Concierge under Activities, Attractions, Boating/Fishing, Historic Savannah, Kids and Families

Many people don’t realize that Savannah has the 4th largest container port in the United States. At 42 feet deep, the Savannah River can take 98% of the world’s ships, which means we can bring in and take out a lot of merchandise. For those who like ships, one of the most awesome sights is to sit on River Street and watch these monsters come in and out. Every Friday, the Savannah Morning News Newspaper publishes a list of ships scheduled to come in and out of the harbor, and the Concierge at Tybee Vacation Rentals keeps that schedule handy, as well.

Go to River Street, order a take-out sandwich and some fantastic candy at River Street Sweets (they’ll give free samples of Pralines, a pecan and caramel, sugary treat), and sit and watch the River and the ships. You can also see the Tugs that help the ships come in and out of the Savannah Harbor. Better yet, take the free ferry across to Hutchinson Island and experience life on the River yourself.
