Jellyfish - Bites and Bits
Oh, the dreaded jellyfish! This year, because of our unusually warm waters spawning bacteria, jellyfish are supposed to be more prolific than ever. Anybody who goes into saltwater is at risk–swimmers, boaters, divers, fishermen. They sting and the painful burning feeling lasts at least 4 hours, and then leaves itching and red welts for days. Some people are allergic to the stings and may suffer more serious effects.
Why do they hurt so much? The long, stringy parts of the jellyfish, called tentacles, have a substance in them called nematocysts. When the tentacles come in contact with your body, they release these pointed, corkscrew nematocysts, some of which work immediately, releasing toxins that cause fiery pain. You then rub or scratch the area, which causes more of the nematocysts to release more toxins–MORE PAIN–then comes the itching on top of the pain! UGH!
What can you do? Some say vinegar works. But there is a new product on the market called Jellyfish Squish which provides “immediate and complete relief from painful stings.” Tybee Vacation Rentals has some of this product in our office for purchase at $9.99 a bottle. The product is endorsed by the American Lifeguard Association. Call 912.786.5852 for information.
