Bugs - How to Keep Them At Bay
Bugs. Ugh! While we know they are food for the birds, they can drive us insane. Tybee Island has her share of bugs, and they can be pesky. Here are some tips on keeping them at bay.
(1) Often the breeze at the beach will keep bugs from landing, so picnicing there is a good idea if there is a breeze. Otherwise, avoid places that have water, especially standing-still water.
(2) Avoid areas that have tall grass. Bugs breed there and will eat you up.
(3) Don’t wear perfume or cologne. They love that! There is one exception: citrus scents, which may keep bugs away.
(4) Wear long-sleeved clothing, hats and bandannas - cotton is best because of its breatheability and white is best as it reflects heat.
(5) Apply bug spray before you leave for your outing and bring some along for later. Sweat will cause the spray to dissipate after a while so you may need additional doses. Also it may help to buy commercial bug sprays and spray the area around your tables. This is usually only temporary, but it can help.
(6) Line your area with citronella candles. The scent deters bugs. Place them around the area you are sitting in and be generous–you can get your own little fortress.
(7) Protect food with lids. Any time food is not being served it should be covered. Stores have great products to put over dishes–stretchable, breathable covers that fit almost any dish, for example.
(8) If you engage in sports or go into the water, reapply bug spray. Better yet, keep cool and avoid sweating and perspiring as bugs like that.
(9) Use netting around your site or put up one of those picnic tents with sides.
(10) Eat garlic! It’s a natural insect repellent when secreted through your pores.
(11) Use skin creams with citrus juices or coconut oil–bugs hate both.
(12) Vitamin B, like garlic, secretes through the pores and acts as a natural repellent.
(13) Burn a smudge stick or a stick of citrus, peppermint or lavender along with your candles.
Have a bug-free time on your holiday.
