Turtle Art Project
In an effort to create public awareness and appreciation of the magnificent sea turtles, artists within the Tybee community and surrounding area created a public art forum designed to engage the viewer with humor and personality on a tour of decorated statues of sea turtles. The project involved artists submitting prototypes of decorated turtles. The judges chose the winners, and some 20-odd turtles were created. These turtles are very large - about 4 feet long and 3 feet wide- and cost $5,000 to create. In October of 2007, most turtles were auctioned off and some were removed to private places, but some still remain on the island. A wonderful family project might be to find the art turtles on the island and take pictures. The turtles can be found:
-in front of the Visitor’s Center
-in front of Chu’s Convenience Store at Campbell and Hwy 80
-in front of Island Dentistry on Hwy 80
-in front of Sugar Shack
-on City Hall’s porch
-in front of the Gymnasium door
-in front of the Library at the street
-next to the Atlantis Inn at the end of Butler
-in Irene Sullivan’s gallery on Tybrisa
-in front of the Marine Science Center
-in front of Atlantic Beacon Gallery
-at the Crab Shack
-at the campground by the office
-and you can just see one on a private porch if you take Butler to the very end and turn left; look on your left and you’ll see “The Cow Jumped Over The Moon.”
