Jellyfish – Bites and Bits

Published by Tybee Concierge under Safety Tips, Travel Tips

Oh, the dreaded jellyfish! This year, because of our unusually warm waters spawning bacteria, jellyfish are supposed to be more prolific than ever. Anybody who goes into saltwater is at risk–swimmers, boaters, divers, fishermen. They sting and the painful burning feeling lasts at least 4 hours, and then leaves itching and red welts for days. Some people are allergic to the stings and may suffer more serious effects.

Why do they hurt so much? The long, stringy parts of the jellyfish, called tentacles, have a substance in them called nematocysts. When the tentacles Continue Reading »

Turtle Art Project

Published by Tybee Concierge under Activities

In an effort to create public awareness and appreciation of the magnificent sea turtles, artists within the Tybee community and surrounding area created a public art forum designed to engage the viewer with humor and personality on a tour of decorated statues of sea turtles. The project involved artists submitting prototypes of decorated turtles. The judges chose the winners, and some 20-odd turtles were created. These turtles are very large – about 4 feet long and 3 feet wide- and cost $5,000 to create. In October of 2007, most turtles were auctioned off and some were removed to private places, but some still remain on the island. A wonderful family project might be to find the art turtles on the island and take pictures.  The turtles can be found:

-at the entrance to Tybee
-in front of the Visitor’s Center
-in front of Chu’s Convenience Store at Campbell and Hwy 80
-in front of Island Dentistry on Hwy 80
-on City Hall’s porch
-in front of the Gymnasium door
-in front of the Library at the street
-next to the Southend Cafe on Inlet Breeze by Arby’s
-in Irene Sullivan’s gallery on Tybrisa
-in front of the Marine Science Center
-in front of Atlantic Beacon Gallery
-at the Crab Shack
-at the campground by the office
-on the Ft. Screven Guard House porch
-and you can just see one on a private porch if you take Butler to the very end and turn left; look on your left and you’ll see “The Cow Jumped Over The Moon.”

Tybee Vacation Rentals’ Information Center can help you find the turtles. Contact us at 912-786-5352.

Turtle Watch

Published by Tybee Concierge under Activities, Ecotourism

Tybee Island Loggerhead Sea TurtleTybee Island is a nesting place for endangered sea turtles. All species of turtles that live on and near Tybee are endangered, making it necessary to pay special attention to protecting them. Every year from May 1st to October 1st some turtles make their way back to Tybee beaches (especially at night) to lay their eggs. This is a long and arduous journey, often meaning that the turtles must cross the road. In fact, Highway 80 has several “turtle crossing” signs to warn motorists that turtles may be on the road. The island does have turtle patrols that go out in the early morning to try and help turtles across the road, and to try and save turtles that have been hit.
