Paula Deen
Paula Deen, the Queen of southern cooking, is a famous Savannahian with two cooking shows (Paula’s Party and Paula’s Home Cooking), best-selling cookbooks, a magazine, a store of specialty items (The Paula Deen Store), a restaurant (Lady & Sons), and a tour (Old Savannah Tours). She’s appeared a number of times on the Oprah Show. Her two sons, Jamie and Bobbie who are in business with her, also have hosted a television show (Road Tasted) and have several cookbooks of their own, and her brother operates Uncle Bubba’s Oyster House.
Many visitors to Savannah come just to eat at The Lady & Sons restaurant on West Congress St. and Whitaker. They only take reservations for parties of 10 or more, so it’s usually a wait to get in. They do now have a system where you can put your name on the list, and the host will let you know when you can come back and expect to be called; this alleviates a long wait in line. The restaurant opens at 11:00 am daily for lunch but people begin lining up at 9:00 am. They stop serving lunch at 3:00 pm. They open for dinner Monday through Saturday 5:00 pm until ? and Sunday 11:00 am until 5:00 pm. (buffet only). She specializes in southern foods, with fried chicken being her main staple; however, the buffet includes no less than ten different dishes such as succotash, collard greens, beef stew, mashed and sweet potatoes, and a choice of one of her famous desserts. She is also known for the Hoe Cakes and Cheese Biscuits every customer gets once they are seated.
Next to her restaurant is her Paula Deen Shop featuring her favorite gadgets, cookbooks, aprons, and other cooking items.
Old Savannah Tours offers a Paula Deen tour where guests can visit the former places she lived, worked and shopped. They include a trip out to Bethesda Chapel, the scene of her marriage, lunch at Uncle Bubba’s Oyster House and bag of goodies.
Uncle Bubba’s Oyster House hours are Monday through Sunday lunch 11:00 am to 3:00 pm and they begin serving dinner at 5:00 pm until…. This restaurant is located at 104 Bryan Woods Rd. on Wilmington Island.
