Public Beach Locations
Tybee has about five miles of clean beaches with lifeguards on duty in season. There are two public beaches: one located at the south end of the island and one at the north end.
The south end is more for kids, teens and families while the north end is quieter and less populated. Both, however, can be very busy.
For the south end, take Butler Ave. to 14th street and turn left. Park in the lot at the Pier. Beach is all along the front. Note: there is a charge for parking. You can also go down Tybrisa Street and park in a second lot along the Strand. There are several shops on Tybrisa that sell beach items, bathing suits, suntan lotions, towels and toys. You can rent beach equipment by calling Tim’s Beach Gear at 912.786.8467 or Burke’s Beach Rental at 912.658.8818. Also, there’s an old fashioned ice cream shack at 5 Tybrisa St. They sell ice cream, candy, popcorn, cotton candy and drinks.
For the north beach, take Butler Ave. to the light at North Campbell St. (by the Post Office) and turn north. You will come to a “T”–make a left then a right onto Meddin Drive. Follow it around to the Ft. Screven Museum. You can park in the small lot in front of the museum or in the large lot behind the museum. You will need to pay for parking. There are really no shops here except for the shop museum, so you will need to have your equipment with you or call Tim’s Beach Gear or Burke’s Beach Rental.
There are seven Mobi-Mat locations for wheelchairs. They are located at:
Gullick Street; East Gate (2nd Street and Solomon); 8th Street; 9th Street; 13th Street; 14th Street; and 18th Street.
