Fort Pulaski National Monument
This outstanding national fort and monument is another must-see for Tybee visitors. The restored fort tells the story of events that took place on April 11-12, 1862 that forever changed defensive strategies worldwide. Located on Cockspur Island, the fort is well-preserved and a fine example of 19th century military architecture. Its 5,600 acres offer an introductory video, exhibits, interpretive programs, a gift shop and bookstore, nature trails, a picnic area and cannon and gun firings. Outstanding place to go for all ages. Very well preserved with a fascinating history. Kids can view the big cannons and there are cannon firings (call for schedule) and gun demonstrations. The moat surrounding the cannon often has small alligators sunning themselves on the edge. Highly recommend.
