Tybee Crab Cab

Published by Tybee Concierge under Activities, Community Links, Destination Information, Services

Why pay the parking fee ($1.50 per hour), try to find a place to park (impossible) or drink water for an evening because you are the designated driver when out on Tybee?  Take the Crab Cab–the only cab company located here on Tybee. They can be there in minutes, ready to take you and your friends anywhere. They can drop you off at the door–keep you from walking in the heat–let you imbibe and have a good time–and generally be your transportation around the island.

Want to go to the fireworks, but don’t want to mess with the traffic, which will be horrendous? Take Crab Cab there and back. Wallah–no problems.

Prices are reasonable. A group can go anywhere for $10 plus $1 for each additional person. Need the airport? Crab Cab will take you for $50 and $5 for each additional person–a deal if you split the cost. Go to River Street in Savannah for $30 for 3 and $3 each additional person. Want one of the close islands? CC will take you for $20 and $2 each additional person.  Call 912.786.CRAB (2722).

Tybee Celebrates Independence Day on July 3rd

Published by Tybee Concierge under Activities, Attractions, Kids and Families, Travel Tips

Tybee Island, Ga. – (June 30, 2009) Tybee Island will host a fireworks display at the Walter J. Parker Pier and Pavilion to begin after dark, between about 9:00 to 9:30 PM, the evening of Friday, July 3rd. Visible from nearly any of Tybee’s eastern beaches, the ocean provides a clear view to the pier where the fireworks are set up.

Visitors should be aware that the Independence Day Celebrations generate some of the largest crowds of the year on Tybee Island. Traffic in both directions on US Highway 80 – Victory Drive will be heavy, and parking spaces will be in high demand. It would be best to arrive early to make sure you have a place to park, but remember that parking fees are enforced from 8am to 8pm every day. CONSIDER TAKING A CAB TO GET TO THE FIREWORKS: CRAB CAB AT 912.786.CRAB.

The Miley Blog

Published by Tybee Concierge under Attractions, Destination Information, Uncategorized

She’s here! Miley Cyrus, Greg Kinnear, and soon, Kelly Preston, are on Tybee making the movie The Last Song. Miley is being very generous with her smiles and picture opportunities. She recently showed up at 2 local restaurants, actually taking the stage and treating her fans to a song or two in one. The Savannah Morning News prints the latest everyday in the newspaper, along with pictures of the lucky girls who get to meet Miley.

It’s exciting to be a guest on Tybee now–even though a bit of the beach is closed for the filming, it’s way at the south end, mostly on private property, and we still have TONS of beach for your pleasure (5 miles all together). And since we just refurbished the beach with wonderful sand, the beaches are wide, clean and ready for you. The Pier will be closed temporarily off and on for only 3 days–the 19th, 22nd and 23rd of June. Come down and watch the excitement–they’ve set up a carnival at the Pier for their film, and it’s adding to the festive atmosphere. Actually, Tybee had an amusement park here at one time, so for you folks familiar with Tybee, it’s going to be nostalgic.

Don’t like the excitement? No problem. We can put you in some spectacular places on the north end of Tybee where you’ll never hear a peep about movies, filming or stars.

No matter what, it will be thrilling when the movie comes out and you can watch it and remember that YOU WERE THERE!

More Bug Information

Published by Tybee Concierge under Safety Tips, Travel Tips, Uncategorized

Recently, I ran across some helpful information about keeping the bugs at bay. We already have a blog giving tips on dealing with pesky creatures. Click here for that information.    Bugs-How to Keep Them At Bay

Here is the additional material I discovered.

Take up to 100 mg of riboflavin (or B2) about an hour before heading outdoors. Though little research has been done on the subject, the vitamin may work by giving off an odor that’s unappealing to insects (but undetectable to humans).

Avoid going outdoors at dawn or dusk when mosquitoes are out in full force. Wear light-colored loose-fitting, long sleeved shirts and pants with tightly woven fabric and avoid using floral-scented lotions, lip products and shampoos (they taste good to bugs).

Insect repellents that contain the chemical ingredient DEET are the most effective (if you’re leery of putting them on your skin, spray it on your clothes instead). If you want to go natural, look for soybean oil on the labels of brands like Bite Blocker (available at Whole Foods Market).

Sunburn Myths/Truths

Published by Tybee Concierge under Beach Blog, Safety Tips

Baby oil and iodine–that’s what we use to put on before we laid in the sun.  I shiver to think of it now, and I’m paying the price with, so far, 3 trips to the dermatologist for pre-cancer removals.

Thank goodness we are much more enlightened on the dangers of the sun, but what do you do if you like being out in it? Recently I found information in the SpryLiving Magazine debunking the myths and enlightening the truths. Here are the best.

“I can’t get burned if I’m sitting in the shade.”

Escaping the sun under a tightly woven, dark colored umbrella away from reflective surfaces like water or sand can offer protection equal to 50 SPF, but if you’re on the beach, near the wet stuff, or even inside, Continue Reading »
